The Wall!

January

It was the time when Beyonce became so very irresistibly sasha fierce and started hollering about Jay putting a ring on it!  And Taylor Swift was just a quiet country girl in a princess dress looking for her Romeo…without any interruptions from Kanye.  And Britney was back reprimanding all men who couldn’t keep their tiger wood in control.  And what were we doing – we were playing Lady Gaga’s first international hit single, spying on Beyonce in a hot cop outfit and laughing as Pink set her hair on fire!  The top hits we kicked off the year were Just Dance, If I Were A Boy, Hot n’ Cold, So What, Love Story, Womanizer and Disturbia!

February

This was the month that spawned the insatiable demand for what could easily be termed one of the nominees for anthem of the year!  The request shows just couldn’t get enough of a song that has TNL written on it from Star to Sailor…!  This was the month when Tell Me It’s Not Over became the soundtrack of our days…of course it sounded like something The Fray or even Muse could piece together but that just meant it was real TNL-style genius!  It was also the month of the Grammys!  When people who weren’t into blues knew who Alison Krauss was and people who didn’t know Robert Plant can do more than his body-twisting decade-piercing holler almost forgot who Led Zeppelin was!  It was the month when we told you just how magical the duo’s album, Raising Sand, and when some of our jocks raised a bit of sand in Dubai for the Dubai Desert Rock Festival, giving us an amplified ear to the ground to hear the sounds of August Burns Red, Arch Enemy and Motorhead!

March

In this month, marching out into the fields was an irresistible entourage of young’uns ready to melt your hearts with just one look!  No it wasn’t the puppy love that you get struck with when watching the big match season of strapping school boy cricket…this was real puppy love!  And kittens too!  TNL together with her sister station Lite 89.2 and a whole heap of sponsors, organized a Puppy Adoption Drive at the Vihara Mahadevi Park called Puppy Love.  Scores of orphan animals found their way to loving homes…no pup (or kitten) was left behind!

When Akon says it, nobody thinks it’s rude.  So we thought we’d just stick it to your car!  The TNL crew got very street, as they started face-lifting vehicles with funky new TNL stickers!  And just so everybody else can keep their grubby vandalizing hands away from your car…we gave away a car alarm system worth Rs. 20,000 from Sun Lanka Auto Traders (Pvt) Ltd as part of the Smack That – Sticker Jam Promo!

May

This was the month of a mind-boggling milestone!  When riddles were making DJ look sound like Rumplestiltskin and trivia was making everybody else look like Rs 5000/-.  TNL launched the TNL Big Quiz, held every first and last Wednesday of the month at the Union Bar & Grill, Jaic Hilton, now hosted by DJ and Ishara of The Big Show. The team that answers correctly the most amount of trivia and brain teasers wins Rs. 5000/- in cash.

And when cricket was getting 20-20 stingy, we were getting 10,000 plenty!  The Coke TNL Rocks Six A Side Cricket Tournament was held at the Old Racecourse Grounds with teams from various corporate firms and schools across the city playing for Rs.10,000!

Someone told you, you told me, cash rules everything…even cricket it seems!  When cricket becomes this easy to score big with, you know you can’t say no to T20!  Sixes that sail for miles like goodness gracious great balls of fire and bowling that splits wickets like pins struck out in the bowling alley – and of course, the acrobatic pom-poming of the cheering squads!  This was the month of ICC T20 World Cup cricket loving, and TNL ever ready to multiply the love like Lucy and her diamonds, set up a sky high portal into the live action.  The Cricket Carnival was held at the CH&FC grounds and featured a giant screen view of the T20 action and gave away airline tickets from Sri Lankan Airlines and gift packs from Union Assurance.

July

After all that adrenaline pumping cricket action, not too mention the deflated conclusion at the hands of Pakistan, it felt like the exhilaration of dating McDreamy and then discovering that he doesn’t like girls.  That shocking, that disappointing, that kind of teenage drama.  We needed some comfort food!  And everybody knows in radio terms that means acoustic music.  101.7 TNL held Simplicity to celebrate TNL’s sweet sixteen!  The night featured acoustic music by the beach, under the golden hue of a bonfire and the  Golden Mile, Mount Lavinia.  Several bands including Cynosure, The rebels, Point Blank, Sam, Breathe Space, Shane, Battery, Asela, Soul Free and C. C performed that night. VIP members got in free while everybody else got in exclusively by invitation only!  And to top of the bliss of being a teenager in love with music, the jocks at TNL got together and wrote and sung an original composition, The Birthday Song.

August

We couldn’t keep electrical demands of rock and roll in the back for too long.  Before we knew it were hauling ground-splitting amplifiers and goliath speakers out of our vaults onto the only stage that can create an inimitably high quality concert experience.  The kind that fills arenas in international venues and makes stars in world tours.  We kicked off the preliminary rounds of TNL Onstage 2009!  And we also broadcast an entire weekend of music in tribute to Woodstock to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the generation-defining moment in music history!

September

This year’s TNL Onstage was the biggest to date because it was the tenth anniversary of this music milestone.  We were set to take the show and a brand new frequency to Kandy; we roadtripped in Colombo from hot venue to hot venue; we gave away lots of free tickets and even had a new Vote Your Choice Award for the band that the listeners loved the most and gave the most avid Onstage fans special edition Onstage gift packs.  All of this and more was part of Season 10’s edition of TNL Onstage!

Best Band – Five Minutes Apart, Best Soloist - Sam, headlining band- Civilization 1! These streets will make you feel brand new.  These lights will inspire you.  Now you don’t need to make it to New York to make your dreams come true!  How come it doesn’t sound so corny when Alicia Keys is hollering it and hurt-your-lungs pitches and Jay-Z is rapping it?  TNL didn’t just line the streets with Onstage culture and crowds nor just light up the SLECC like woodstock with the stars (literally) for the Finals of TNL Onstage 2009…instead the trailblazing network opted for the most criminal act of rock and roll in Sri Lanka!  We launched a record label called Criminal Records to promote the compositions and music talent of Sri Lankans.  The label’s first release was a compilation from Sri Lankan music hero, Chitral Somapala, called “The Works of Chithral Sompala”, which includes his hit single, Nadee Ganga.  The CD is now available for sale at TNL Radio Network and at The BT Store.

Whether it’s the Flea from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers or Steven Spieldberg –plenty of people go back to school after they’ve become stars.  But when Chitral Somapala and Civilization 1 go back to school – they make more stars!  School of Rock was a music workshop held at the Galadari Hotel, conducted free of charge by TNL Radio Network and presented by Criminal Records, for anyone who wanted to be the next Mark Wahlberg of rock and roll! The workshop featured each member of Civilization One (all of whom are professional music teachers) discussing various instruments as they revealed their secrets of performing at an international level.
