‘1901’ – a few years after the Eiffel Tower was displayed as one of France’s most prestigious displays of engineering prowess and a few years after the unveiling of the Paris Metro line. Two feats that were displayed in the infamous Universal Expositions that Paris became famed for in the late 19th century and early 20th century.
“Paris in 1901 was better than it is now,” those are the infamous words used by Thomas Mars to describe the lead single taken off the Grammy award-winning French band’s, fourth studio album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.
Phoeneix vocalist Thomas Mars teams up with brother, Laurent Brancowitz, who was formerly part of a team that later became Daft Punk (Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo), and Deck D'Arcy, Christian Mazzalai to release the song that has become the fourth single of an independently released record label to reach number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Alternative Songs Chart.
The band’s music has been featured in many soundtracks before, including Lost in Translation. 1901 is featured in the theatrical trailer for the movie, New York, I Love You.
On the tribute that the song pays to early Paris, Mars said, "Paris in 1901 was better than it is now. So the song is a fantasy about Paris".
